Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an abstract painting course?
No. I'm not teaching how to paint specifically abstract art; the premise is to borrow from the expressive and abstracted end of the spectrum in order to loosen up and move away from realism, and the restrictions created by defaulting to copying. I paint in abstract but do not limit myself to that; my work is often reminiscent of its subject without being realistic.
For me the most exciting place on the realism>>abstract spectrum dances around the area where you are stretching what you see and being suggestive. We will look at some fully abstract art, but the focus here is on starting from a recognisable subject and taking it into a realm of our own unique style. It's up to you how far you take it.
What's the course format?
There are twenty lessons in total, which are all available in the classroom once you register, for you to begin when you're ready and work through at your own pace.
Some days are painting days, and some are for inspiration and percolating ideas. Lessons consist of a combination of video demonstrations, written material, downloadable pdfs, images, and slideshows.
I recommend revisiting any lessons that particularly strike a chord with you. Doing each only once will introduce you to new ideas, but it's the repetition that beds things in and allows for new discoveries that feel ever closer to what's true for you. Take what you need and let go of anything that doesn't sing to you.
Is there a place to share and receive feedback?
Absolutely! The course has its own self contained space to share and ask questions within each lesson, so everything's in one private place.
How much does the course cost?
The course costs £297. That's approximately $407 USD, 335 Euros, $514 CAD, and $525 AUD, depending on exchange rates.
There is a payment plan which splits payments across two months.

What will I need to take the course?
There's a materials list inside the course in the welcome section, although if you're already making art you likely have a lot of the supplies already. You'll also need an internet connection that is fast enough to watch the videos. If you want to print off the PDFs you'll need access to a printer.
